Old Girl Reports and Sightings:
4.21.08 - Alums spotted around Tallahassee... Karin Morton was spotted at a recent "Bedhead Bettys" concert at the American Legion Hall here in Tallahassee. Karin is still based in California but travels back to Tallahassee from time to time. At the concert was a slew of alums enjoying this new local band. Jackie Watts, Ellen Shine, Mary Waller, Carol Kinnunen and Colleen Fahey were all spotted on or near the dance floor!
4.21.08 - Betsy Abrams '77 / '78, another one of our pioneer members has re-connected with us! Betsy writes: "I'm a very "old girl" and played briefly in '77 or '78 as a wing. My main interest was (and still is) soccer and I've played in 3 fairly recent Veteran's Cups ('03,'05 and '06). I played with Mary Holmes and Candi Orsini, and other terrific players who did all the work, while I scored a few points ;-). I live in Atlanta, GA." Drop her a line at: baabrams@hotmail.com 4.7.08 - FSU and UF Alum Eileen McCann participated in the recent UF reunion weekend. A bunch of UF alums were coerced into PLAYING in the Prom Rugby match, where the UF alums take on the undergrads in a rugby match where everyone is wearing a prom dress. Eileen reports a great time by all and some terrific tackling by the alums during the match. The weekend was also a fundraiser for the team's trip to New Mexico for the Sweet Sixteen's. Check out more info and a video of the match! And congrats to the UF undergrads for making it to the Sweet 16 at this year's collegiate nationals! Bravo! FSU Alum Selected to Coach South Senior Women
2.21.08 - From USA Press release:FSU Alum and USA Eagle Patty Jervey was appointmented as the new Head Coach of the South Senior Women's All-Star team. A record-setting leader on the national team, Jervey made her first appearance as an Eagle in 1989. She is the most capped player on the Women's National Team with 40 caps and holds the record for the most points scored with 178 total points. Jervey was a player on the Eagle team that won the 1991 World Cup, and was a key contributor for the U.S. team in the 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006 World Cups. Jervey has been an outstanding player for the South since beginning her rugby career more than 20-plus years ago first at the University of South Carolina. Her rugby career solidified after relocating to Tallahassee to play with perennial power Florida State. Jervey later moved to Atlanta and earned a spot with the Division 1 Harlequins. Jervey has assisted with coaching the Harlequins over the years, and is now committed to using her extensive experience and contacts to help launch an intense rebuilding phase for the South Senior Women's All-Star program. A young, developmental 2007 South team entered the National All-Star Championships last June ranked 8th. The South team upset the #5 ranked West by a score of 39 to 20, then lost by one try to Southern Cal in the Final, with a score of 25 to 20. The wins moved the South All-Star squad up to a 6th place ranking in the United States. Jervey plans to build on this momentum, and she shares Kevin Kittos' goals to not only expand and revive the South Women's programs, but to increase the visibility of South players on the Women's National Teams. Jervey has successfully played most backline positions, but is most often seen at center and wing. She lives in Tucker, Georgia. ![]() Dana Teagarden referring the West Indies v. Fiji match - February 2007. (Photo credit: Randall Mar) 2.25.07 - History was made at the IRB World Series Sevens, San Diego in February 2007. FSU Alum Dana Teagarden became the first woman to referee a senior men's international match. She was appointed by the IRB's Paddy O'Brien to six full matches over the weekend of international rugby, including the tough Bowl final between Argentina and Tonga. We can all be very proud of Dana, she smashed any 'glass ceiling' that might have existed, and rugby is a better place today because of her achievements. Three cheers for Dana! 2.21.08 - Another alum found! Alum Renee Sugarman stumbled upon our website while teaching rugby at her school. Here's her update: "I just found your site and I can not tell you how excited I am to be able to look back and see some of the photos from college. I work at North View High School in Alpharetta/ Duluth. I was using playing Rugby, at FSU, as an example for my lesson on speed and velocity. They could not believe I played, so I went on line and found you. I was looking at the photos and there was one taken with sometime in the 90's. Well it was taken in 1990 when I played. My kids loved seeing me, and of course they wanted to know all about the game and see as many photos as possible. I just wanted to say thanks, and what great memories I have being on the team. In fact it was the fondest of them all at FSU, and I learned so much especially about myself while I played. So thank you. "So what is going on with me? You already know I am a school teacher, and I work with EBD kids, emotional, behavior disorder kids, and teach Science. I love it except for all of the paper work. So, when it came to learning restraining, I was the only women who did not have a problem. Before working at North View, I worked at a juvenile psychiatric detention center, with kids that were shipped in from all over the country. It basically was one step above juvenile jail, when the kids were to too hard core and had to be placed somewhere else. It was very interesting. l am now really involved with women's High School Lacrosse, and am a referee. It is great, and nice to know I can still keep up with the High school girls, since I am continually running up and down a football field. The other Referees love it and the girls can't stand it since they like to try to push or through a few elbows. It is a little harder to do when I can keep up. I wish they would allow a little more contact, but rules are rules." "A funny thing recently happened to me when I was flying down to Florida. I ran into an old friend from FSU, who played football while I was there. He used to love to watch us, and admitted Rugby was a lot harder then football. It was strange we recognized each other after all of these years. We get to see each other often and he wants to come with me to watch a few of the games. Well, the bell just rang and I need to run. I do have a question. Is there any way that I can get a hold of my old Jersey or buy a new one? It would mean a lot. Thanks again FSU, and I look forward to coming down, and watching a some the games." Great to hear from you Renee! Drop Renee a line at organicddrh@yahoo.com 1.15.08 - Another alum found! Alum Pam Tully found our site and wrote in this update! "Somehow in looking for some FSU information I stumbled onto the FSU Rugby website and am glad I did. What memories came roaring back when I looked at the photos, we had some awesome times!!! Glad to know we were a part of history for FSU Women Athletics. I actually heard from Debbie Billington some time ago and Diane Connell. It was great to reconnect. Life has been full for me since the Salemburg listing on the site. I am now living in Raleigh NC but have been all over the state. I have been fortunate to have a wonderful career with the State Bureau of Investigation and am now 1 of 5 Assistant Directors....soon to retire in about 2.5 years. I am going to try and make it back to Tallahassee for one of the reunions. Take care and my best to everyone!!! - Pam" Great to here from you, Pam! Casey Fields, Katie Delcontivo and Lori Light were playing for the Orlando Women who came in 3rd in the D2 championships. Adrienne Debonis was playing for Naples, who finished 4th place in D2. Perennial powerhouse Patty Jervey was playing for the Atlanta Harlequins who came in 8th in the D1 division. Mary Holmes was coaching D2 Village Lions to their 6th place finish. Janine Pardee was helping coach the Orlando women.
