Seminole Scrumdown (Ruggerfest) Tournament - February 3, 2001

In chilling weather, FSU won the tournament with 2 hard-fought victories over Auburn University and the University of Florida.

In the first match, FSU battled a determined Auburn side to an early 5-5 deadlock with a try scored by flanker Monique Williams. Ball possession seesawed back and forth with both teams showing determined defense. Finally, outside center Kristen Ludlam scored off a great burst through the line under the post and prop Sarah Crockett put the conversion through for 2 more points. Scrumhalf April Digiannantonio then scored with a weak side move in the corner. FSU maintained steady pressure and capped off the game with another Kristen Ludlam score. Final score: FSU 27, Auburn 5. Congrats to our new rookies: Mary, Erica, and Mariah who showed great courage and potential in their first matches ever!

In the final match, FSU took on a feisty UF side. Scrumhalf April showed great initiative with an early try in the corner but UF came back with their speedy fullback bursting through the line and several tacklers to score under post. They made the conversion which brought them into the lead: 7-5. Minutes later, the UF fullback again took advantage of lax FSU defense to put them further on top 14-5 at the half. After a halftime reassessment, FSU came out strong with excellent ball movement and possession. Finally, inside center Sahar Moghaddam supplied a much needed score to pull FSU to 14-10. FSU pressured in lineouts with rookie flanker Erica Kleinman handling the jumping duties and providing excellent possession. FSU forwards turned it up and forced a long UF defensive stand near goal. With just minutes to spare, scrumhalf April took advantage of the weakside and hammered her way into the try zone corner to put FSU up for the tournament title - 15-14.

FSU at UF - February 10, 2001

FSU won this close match-up with UF 15-0. Inside center Sahar Moghaddam set the tone of the match with a crushing first tackle of the day off the kick off. Early in the first half, prop Sarah Crockett took the initiative with a quick penalty inside Florida's 22, gaining nearly 15 meters then feeding to hooker Katie Delcontivo who crashed in for her first ever score in the corner. Ball possession seesawed back and forth through the rest of the half with FSU successfully defending UF's speedy fullback.

The second half was more of the same until FSU fullback Mary Davis scored off 3rd phase ball through a break in the UF line. The scoring was capped off with another FSU try, this time by second row Sharon Jacoby who cashed in on relentless FSU pressure in the UF red zone. Other outstanding match players: flyhalf Lori Light, outside center Kristen Ludlam, scrumhalf April Digiannantonio, and lock-turned-wing Summer Martinez. Congratulations to wing Kat Phipps getting that first tackle in her first game ever!

Mardi Gras Ruggerfest - February 24-25, 2001

FSU took 3rd place in this competitive tournament. In the first match, FSU beat Rice University handily 17-5. Scrumhalf April Diagianntonio, put FSU on top with an unconverted try in the first 15 minutes. Later in the half, number 8 Katja Scheinemann, capitalized on FSU offensive pressure with a well-deserved try. Prop Sarah Crockett converted one of the tries to add another 2 points. In the second half, April had another break-away try down the sideline off a weakside movement. Rice managed to punch in a try in in the closing minutes but FSU held on to take the game 17-5.

The second game was a tight match-up with the University of North Carolina. FSU were underdogs in this one which was scoreless until late in the second half. Fullback Milca Fils-Aime exploited a hole in the UNC backline and opportunistic play by both backs and forwards lead to the tie-breaking score by flanker Monique Williams. FSU held the UNC team scoreless the rest of the match to end it at 5-0.

Sunday's match saw FSU once again as big underdogs. A larger and more experienced Virginia team dominated play in the first few minutes and gained a disputed try in the opening minutes. FSU backs played ferociously, defending countless punches by the Virginia line and forwards. Flyhalf Lori Light was the heart and soul of this match up where FSU faced relentless offensive pressure by Virgina. Outstanding forwards included: Katja, Crockett, Katie Delcontivo, and Monique. Outstanding backs included: Scrumhalf April, center Sahar Moghaddam, and rookie Meg Wood. After giving up an early second half score, FSU finally quieted the Virginia offensive pressure. Despite heroic efforts, and a missed penalty kick which would have put them on the board, FSU fell 22-0. Congrats to Julie Ross and Meg Wood for playing in their first games and making BIG contributions!

Lightening shortened the final game against Virginia Tech so third place was awarded to both teams. Thanks to the New Orleans Halfmoons for a fantasic and organized tournament. We'll be back next year!

FSU vs UCF - March 3, 2001

FSU took the unofficial Florida Championship by beating UCF 39-0. UCF hosted this match in hot and sunny Orlando. FSU took the lead right away with lock Summer Martinez scoring off 2nd phase ball from scrumhalf April Diagianntonio. FSU never looked back with dominating play from the forwards and relentless offensive drives by the backs. Scorers were: rookie wing Julie Ross, inside center Sahar Moghaddam (2 tries), fullback Mary Davis, scrumhalf April, flyhalf Lori Light and wing Jaime Carson nailing 2 tough conversions in the wind. Congrats to rookie wing Erin Bay on her first game and for her much needed contributions in the second half (running down a speedy UCF back from behind to preserve the shut-out victory!) Also, congrats to rookie flankerDebbie Figuroa for playing in her first match! Way to go!

FSU vs Princeton
In the second match of the day, FSU faced perennial national collegiate powerhouse - Princeton University. FSU played with heart but lost this one 15-0 against a superbly trained and fit squad. Outstanding play was demonstrated by: flyhalf Lori, flanker Diana Debonis, lock Monique Williams, and centers Sahar and Kristen Ludlam.

FAU at FSU - March 24, 2001

Florida Atlantic University was unable to travel toTallahassee to play. Maybe we can meet in the future. Good luck, FAU!

FSU vs UNC - March 31, 2001

In FSU's first appearance at the South Collegiate Finals in 3 years, FSU lost to UNC 5-36. Despite a strong start and a first half try by scrumhalf April Diagianntonnio, FSU succumbed to a strong UNC team in the second half. UNC ran great supported ball right up the middle of the field to put 3 tries on the board in the second half and took the game out of our reach. On Sunday, we watched the defending champs, Clemson University, defeat UNC in the last seconds of play by a penalty kick. Clemson will now go on to face Princeton University in the Collegiate Sweet 16 tournament.

FSU has hope for the future with outstanding play from many young players such as Sarah Crockett - with her great defense in penalty plays, Summer Martinez and Katie Delcontivo for aggressive defense in kickoffs and in the lineouts, Mary Gramling for an awesome catch and ball placement in the tackle plus an aggressive tackle on a UNC wing, Julie Ross for good tackling under pressure, Lori Light for another game of great tackles and kicks, Kat Phipps for a great ball pick-up and set under pressure, and April for outstanding play as scrumhalf (again!)

In other weekend events, the rookies were properly initiated with the wearing of the tradional "Rook Nuks" and the "forgotten vets" were duly initiatied (finally) also!

FSU vs Auburn - April 9, 2001

The Auburn Ruggerfest turned into one game against a short Auburn side. To their credit, Auburn put up a fight even though they were out manned and suffered several injuries during the match that put them down even further.

FSU was still stinging from our loss against South champs - Clemson the week before so we set the pace of the game with ferocious tackling and aggressive ball carrying. FSU scorers were Katja, Julie, Erin, Monique and Lori. Rookie wing Erin posted her first points ever! Congrats, Erin!

That winds up the season for the Lady Seminoles. We will be back next year!
