Heart of Dixie Tournament - Huntsville, AL

FSU started the tournament with 6 rookies on the field against Vanderbuilt. Vandy scored twice in the opening minutes but FSU fought back with a try by flyhalf April Diagianntonio off a weakside run from a ruck. Vandy again came back with 2 scores but FSU answered with 3 tries of our own by April, hooker Katie Delcontivo in a quick penalty initiated by prop Sarah Crockett, and by rookie center Gonzo Gonzalez. FSU was only 2 points from tieing the score when Vandy pulled out all the stops in an aggressive series downfield capped by a late try. Final score FSU 22, Vandy 29.

The second game of the day pitted FSU against Middle Tenn. State Univ. FSU scores by wing Julie Ross, flyhalf April and center Amanda Chaney summed up the game with FSU dominating in scrums and rucks. Two more rookies made appearances in this one. Wing Julie Ross showed outstanding play as did prop Lindsey Panzek.

FSU faced SIU on Sunday morning. We started out strong with an early score by rookie flanker Alyssa Guiccardo but SUI poured it on throughout the game with great running up the middle of the field and capitalized on tackling errors by FSU. Final score: FSU 7, SIU 34.

Congrats to all the FSU rookies - they all did well in their first matches and thanks to our competition for great sportsmanship and good fun! We will see you again.

Battleship Tournament

FSU defeated an aggressive University of Southern Mississippis team 19-0 to start off the tournment. Flanker Kat Phipps started the scoring with a try off a scrum pick-up by #8 Diana Debonis. Prop Sarah Crockett kicked in the conversion for 2 more points. Later in the half, Diana punished the opposing back row with another pick-up for an unconverted try. In the second half, flyhalf April Diagiannantonnio rocked the USM back 3 with a huge kick downfield which our opportunistic center Kristen Ludlam collected just outside the try zone and feed back to April for another unconverted try. To cap off the scoring, April posted another try late in the half and Crockett slotted the conversion to end the match at 19-0. FSU forwards dominated in this match, with outstanding tackling and running by flankers Adrienne DeBonis and Alyssa Guiccardo.

In game 2, which turned out to be the Championship match, FSU took on our pals from the University of Central Florida, winning this one 27-0. Rookie wing Elan Jackson started off the scoring with a well-supported romp down the sideline. Later in the half, scrumhalf Meg Wood scored off multi-phase play with the help of most of the forwards. Two more tries by center Kristen Ludlam and April topped off the day - with Crockett supplying a conversion for 2 more points. Congrats to rookie prop, Darby Frizzell on her first match!

Thanks to the Battleship Rugby Club for a great tournament, and to our much appreciated pick-up players, Ros Chou and Milca Fils-Aime who filled in when we needed them most!

Ruggerfest Tournament - Athens, Georgia

FSU took on fellow division I team - Appalachian State University in the first match of the day - winning handily 50-0. Trys were posted by: #8 Diana Debonis, flanker Adrienne Debonis, flanker Alyssa Guiccardo, wing Julie Ross, scrumhalf Meg Wood, center Amanda Chaney, flyhalf April Diagianntonnio, fullback Sahar Moghaddam and 2 conversions were kicked though by prop Sarah Crockett and 3 by Meg.

FSU then took on the Atlanta Harlequins in a friendly match for experience. The Harlequins dominated but FSU held its own in the first quarter of play. Thanks to Atlanta for the experience.

On Sunday morning, FSU took on their division rivals and defending South Champs, Clemson University. FSU got the game going early with an unconverted try by center Kristen Ludlam after a swift break through from outside the 22 with plenty of backs supporting. Next to score was fullback Sahar Moghaddam and scrumhalf Meg Wood kicked a spectacular conversion for 2 more points. The FSU forwards held fast under relentless pressure from charging Clemson forwards. Hooker Katie Delcontivo was the heart and soul of the forwards by commanding the forwards in tight and low successful scrummaging. Aggressive running by #8 Diana Debonis created countless opportunities for the FSU backline. Senior flyhalf April capped off her collegiate career in style with a late second half score from the scrumhalf position - bringing the final score to 17-0! Contributing to the win with outstanding tackling and heart were: locks Lindsey Panzek and Mariah Clarke, wings Julie Ross, Mary Davis and center Amanda Chaney.
