New Player Camp - September 9, 2000
The South Women's Rugby Collegiate Director (Michelle Yates) created a camp for new players in Atlanta which was attended by an amazing 130 young players. FSU sent a pack of rugby hungry rookies to Atlanta to learn how the game is played (don't worry Mom and Dad we also sent some vets to "babysit"). They learned to lift, they learned to pass, they saw a scrimmage, but most importantly they learned that the great thing about rucks is butts! The rookies also put on a killer skit that blew away the rest of the South!
All Florida Rugby Tournament - September 30, 2000
FSU won the All Florida Rugby Collegiate Tournament at the University of Central Florida, Orlando. In the first match, FSU beat the University of South Florida/Motley 31-0, then FSU defeated the University of Florida 32-0, and, in a thrilling final, outlasted the University of Central Florida 12-5 with a last minute try scored by Kristen Ludlam. Outstanding players during the tournament: Kristen Ludlam, Sarah Crockett, April Diagiannantonio, Amanda Chaney, and Katie Delcontivo.
FSU vs. University of Central Florida - October 7, 2000
This late afternoon match against a talented UCF squad was hard fought but ended in a tie. Lucy Schultz scored the only FSU try late in the first half. A relentless FSU defense held off a strong UCF side in the second half - at one point successfully defending a 5 meter penalty. Outstanding players were: April Diagiannantonio, Lucy Schultz, Amber Gerdes, and Monique Williams.
FSU vs. University of Florida - November 7, 2000
FSU won this match handily 27-0. Scoring for the Lady Noles were: Mary, Kristen (3 tries), and Sahar. Crockett kicked through 1 conversion. Congrats to Mary and Sahar who scored in their first game ever! A 20 minute B-side game was held after the match where rookie prop Cassie also played her first game. Outstanding players for the day were outside center Kristen, scrumhalf April, substitute hooker Amber, and flyhalf Lori had some spectacular tackles. Thanks to our fans for supporting us and to the FSU Boosters for the use of their parking lot. Also, after the game, a game jersey was presented to club sponsor, Jackie Watts! Thank you, Jackie!
Battleship Tournament - November 11-12, 2000
In our final games of the Fall season, FSU took 2nd place in the Battleship Tournament. In the first match against Loyola University (and some of their LSU pickups), FSU backs used every inch of the field with good ball distribution and the FSU forwards dominated the scrums and loose play. FSU scorers were: April (3 tries), Kristen (2 tries), and Mary. Also showing outstanding play were: hooker Katie (who stole some opposing hooks), inside center Amanda with her fearless runs up the middle, flyhalf Lori with her awesome kicks, prop Monique for setting good rucks, and Danielle, our utility player at flanker.
In game 2, FSU collegiates took on the Atlanta Harlequins club side (and eventual tournament champions). In textbook fashion, Atlanta taught us how to play the game and we realized new heights of fitness and game savvy. But all was not lost as we never let down and held them to less scoring in the second half! Aggressive tackling was displayed by the entire side including outstanding play by Summer, Lori, Katja, Jamie, Amber, Sahar, Crockett, Amanda and Katie. Sideline support also helped us through the long game which ended at 79-0. Ouch!
On Sunday morning, FSU got its revenge by defeating the Birmingham Women's Rugby Club 29-0. Once again, the backs displayed good passing, used smart kicking, and put points on the board. FSU frustrated the Birmingham offense in the second half by successfully defending countless 5 meter scrums, lineouts and offensive moves within the 22. FSU scorers were: April, Amanda (2 tries), and Kristen (2 tries). Other outstanding players for the match were: Brennan for her support and setting the ball, Katja for her goal line defense, locks Summer and Chrissy for their hard work in the scrums against a heavier pack, and fullback Mary for playing with a sore ankle! Another important game note: Birmingham Women's Rugby Club was founded and coached by former FSU Women's Rugby Club founding member, Annette Ruff! Way to go, Annette!
During the weekend, FSU rookies were guided by Rookie Trainer, Summer in various activities which included the wearing of the "Rook Nuk", the singing of "traditional" rugby songs, and the announcement of the rookie nicknames. Congratulations on your first season, rookies! "Rookies No More!"
