FSU at UF - Feb 23, 2002

FSU tied UF in this tough match which featured pouring rain, 47 degree temp., rowdy fans, and evenly matched backlines. Scoring for the Lady Seminoles were #8 Diana DeBonis off a brilliant pickup behind the scrum from 30 meters out; and another score from fullback Sahar Moghaddam after she picked off a pass in the UF backline 30 meters out. FSU dominated in scrums and lineouts with the forwards shining despite the weather. Outstanding tackling by new flanker Lindsey Panzek, hooker Katie Delcontivo and flyhalf Meg Wood kept FSU in striking distance. The tie effectively puts FSU out of the race for the South Championships but keeps the FSU - UF rivalry alive till our next meeting! The Gators and Clemson will advance to the South Championships in April - good luck to both of them!

FSU at UCF - March 2, 2002

FSU took on a tough UCF team in extremely windy conditions in Orlando. FSU opened up the scoring first with a try by wing Mary Davis who was nicely set up by outside center Kristen Ludlam in multi-phase play. New inside center Adrienne DeBonis then broke through the defending backline on 3rd phase play and finished a well-supported run upfield for another 5 points. UCF answered with a score of their own. In the second half, fullback Sahar Moghaddam crashed though the line and finished the play with a nifty grubber kick and was awarded a try. Outstanding play by number 8 Diana Debonis, flankers Lindsey Panzek and Sarah Crockett helped seal the FSU win.

FSU vs. Naples WRFC

FSU then took on a more experienced Naples club side. Flyhalf Amanda Chaney evened an early score by Naples with a well-supported back line try. Naples then answered with another try. FSU held the Naples line throughout the rest of the match but time ran out with the final score at Naples 10 - FSU 5. Outstanding players for FSU included: hooker Katie Delcontivo, rookie prop Darby Frizzell and #8 Diana DeBonis. Three FSU Rookies took the field this weekend and all made outstanding contributions - congratulations to: Rachel, Julie, and Cretti! Also, thanks to our fans who braved the wind and sun to support the team!

Thanks to our host team - UCF. The fields and ref (thanks, Kerri!) were great and the social was fun! See you soon!

FSU vs Birmingham Women's Rugby Club

In rainy and terribly muddy conditions, FSU came out strong in this match against Birmingham. First to score was our number 8 Diana Debonis after a long lineout throw that caught Birmingham by surprise inside their 22 meters. Another score was posted by outside center Mary Davis in a nice first phase looping try. It was a tough second half as aggressive tackling by our backline was needed to stop Birmingham. FSU forwards produced plenty of offensive opportunities which flyhalf Sahar Moghaddam finally capitalized on with a try from midfield after overrunning the Birmingham defense.

In the final match of the day, FSU pounded a feisty Tennessee side for a 7-0 win. Evenly matched backlines lead to multiphase ball where FSU forwards held fast. Hooker Katie Delcontivo brought down countless Tenn. players in penalty defense and close contact running. Flyhalf Sahar Moghaddam posted the only try of the match in the first half with a burst through the defense off a 5 meter scrum. Prop Sarah Crockett delivered the extra points to put FSU ahead 7-0. The second half was a hotly contested matchup with FSU forwards holding on to the lead under constant pressure. Other FSU standouts were: prop Darby Frizzell, inside center Arienne Debonis, rookie lock Julie Seda and scrumhalf Kat Phipps.

Thanks to the Auburn Women's Rugby Club for hosting the tournment and the party! We had a great time!
